11:00AM - COLOCATION

Hey everyone,

I'm in Paris at this moment looking for a "colocation" or house sharing. Meaning that i'd like to find people already having an apartment in Paris or close suburbs and wishing to share costs with me.

I'm a student in Paris-3 for this (and the next) academic year. I'm 31 years old, without animals, occasional smoker. I like laughing and having fun which does not mean i'm not responsible.

Voilà. Please reply to LJ of Facebook.

Merci,
Ruslan

5:43PM - Graphic Designers in Paris

Hey

I'm currently in Paris as an exchange student. Back in New York (and I'm hoping here as well), I did freelance graphic design, and I'd love to find fellow designers here but... well, haven't. Actually I don't know where you guys are. What's up? Can we get together? Where's the design culture? Events? Info? Work?

Thanks a bunch,
Yana

2:21PM - Burlesque life-drawing session, this Saturday in Paris!

Dames! Drinks! Drawings!

Come bask in the wonder that is Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School, a series of unusual life-drawing sessions in Paris, starring fabulous models and burlesque dancers!

August is vacation time in Paris, but that doesn't mean we can't keep drawing! On Saturday August 8th, from 9-11pm, Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School will be putting on a mellow, vintage-style drawing session as part of the month-long Retro Mania festival: http://www.fiftiessound.com/party.htm

The beautiful models pose in cute burlesque costumes, and you sketch them, it's as simple as that. Can't draw to save your life? Try "drunk drawing", our tried and true method...!
Don't forget to bring a sketch pad, eraser and pencils. Participation in the drawing session is 5 euros.

The event will be held at Nex Step, 11 Cour Debille, Paris 11th (small street facing 175 Avenue Ledru Rollin), metro: Voltaire.

7:37AM - Working in Paris

Hi, I've noticed that a few people in this community have experience living in France and I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice.
I've been making plans to move to Paris in around 4 to 5 months. I'm not concerned about the Loneliness Factor as I have a number of good friends living there and also have plans for accommodation, the only thing I was wondering about was how people find work? Currently I live in Australia, I'll have an Honours degree in arts and years of work experience in office admin type jobs BUT my french language skills aren't the greatest and I'm told it's quite hard to find employment if you're not fluent. But I'm quite happy to do any kind of work, as long as I'm not starving (bar work/cleaning/hospitality/anything!), I'm also considering continuing my studies and going for my Masters but I'm not sure what my options are.

Does anyone have any advice or experiences they can share?

4:09PM - Dames! Drinks! Drawings! Friday July 24th at the Curio Parlor in Paris...

Come bask in the wonder that is Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School, a series of unusual life-drawing sessions in Paris, starring fabulous models and burlesque dancers, music and cocktails!

The next Dr. Sketchy's event will be on the 24th of July: an evening of live sketching as an homage to Art Nouveau, the turn-of-the century art movement that was inspired by organic, sensual forms. It will star Les Fleurs Sauvages, a charmingly delicate performance duo from England, as well as other beautiful pin-ups. They pose, and you sketch them, it's as simple as that. Can't draw to save your life? Try "drunk drawing", our tried and true method! Don't forget to bring a sketchpad, eraser and pencils. Participation in the drawing session is 10 euros.

The drawing session will be at the Curio Parlor bar, 16 rue des Bernardins, in the 5th, Metro Maubert-Mutualite, from 7:30pm-9:30pm.

4:35PM - Biking in France

Hello,

I am flying into Paris in August with two other friends of mine. We are planning to bike around France for about 3 weeks, and then fly out of Paris back to the USA.

We're trying to decide what the cheapest option for biking around the country would be.
Would it be more cost efficient for us to fly our own bikes to Paris or is there an inexpensive bike rental company in Paris?
Or.. could someone point me in the direction of a reliable used bike shop in Paris?

Any other suggestions are also welcome. Thank you so much.

3:30PM - Charm bracelet and Christmas ornament

Hi everyone!

A friend has asked me to bring her back a Paris-themed charm bracelet link and/or a Paris-themed Christmas ornament (preferably the Arc de Triomphe). I lived in Paris for 3 years but I moved to Vancouver two years ago and never had a chance to do much of the touristy stuff in Paris, so I'm not sure where I could find either item. Would anyone have a souvenir shop or a Christmas ornament store to recommend?

Thanks! :)

8:23PM - Can-can boots

I would love to buy some authentic can-can boots while I'm in Paris, but I'm having difficulty figuring out from what I can find online if Msr. Clairvoy has a store, or if he/they only make boots to order. Does anyone know? And, if he/they do sell ready made boots, does anyone know the approximate price range? Thank you!

10:18AM - Need some help!

Hey hey. I have two issues I need help with:

1. One of my good friends is currently studying abroad in Paris... but, she hates to admit this, but.... she's bored. But it's not the city; she just doesn't know what kind of events are going on! (the program isn't very culturally-emerging, apparently.) She's not the type to really go clubbing or bar hopping. Travel is also a bit too expensive for her (she'd love to do that, but it's out of her budget.) My question is: is there a website or weekly newsletter for locals on events that are going on? Like the Paris equivalent of LA Weekly, for anyone familiar with that magazine. She likes going to see local bands, art galleries, indie film screenings, food/wine tastings... that sort of stuff.

2. I'm going to Amsterdam and Paris the week of March 15! It'll be my first time in either city, and I'm SO excited. The group I'm going with has morning touristy stuff going on, but I want to dedicate my evenings seeking out those great hidden finds. Any suggestions? But more importantly, I'm also really interested in (artsy fartsy) photography, so do you guys have any places that you just absolutely love and would make for great (artsy fartsy) photography?

There was a LOT to this entry, but any tips would be much appreciated! Especially for my friend, I hate that she's not experiencing Paris like she should be.

10:44PM - Some advice about Paris.

I have just booked a trip to Paris this summer for me and my mum. it will be around the 4th/5th time we've been, so we have done all the touristy stuff, and i was just wondering if people could recommend anything in Paris to do other that the obvious stuff? Any less known areas to visit? Places for good second hand shopping? Flea Markets? Food Markets? We are staying in Le Village Hostel, just below the sacre Coeur in Montmatre, and would love to explore more of the city, from a non tourist point of view, if possible. Any suggestions would be great!
Thanks in advance...
Rosie.

9:41PM - Shopping for inexpensive scarves in Paris

Hi, all -

I'm going to be in Paris for a quick three days in February, and was asked by some friends to pick up scarves in the pashmina and keffiyeh styles (although I think another friend is going to ask for something in the Hermes vein!). Last time I was there, I was visiting San Denis and ended up buying a few very inexpensive (but much better quality than the ones sold to tourists by Notre Dame) pashmina-style scarves at a stall in a small outdoor market very near the Basilica. The stall had a really nice variety of colors and if they hadn't been right at closing time I'd have spent a lot more time there and bought more than I did! After some googling, I see that there is both an indoor food market and an outdoor market in the area.

What I'd like to know is whether this market is likely to be open in February and if it's only a weekend or weekday market (I honestly can't recall the day I was there) and if anyone has better suggestions for where I could find what I'm looking for. I won't have much time to shop, so I'm looking for a place that would have the best variety in color and style and, of course, not break my pocketbook!
